The Southern Rams placed third this past weekend at the Musselman Duals in Inwood, WV. There were 16 team competing from all over West Virginia and Virginia. It was a tough test for the Rams and the team performed well. In the end, Southern won 7 matches and lost only two to earn the third spot.
The tournament started on Friday afternoon with the Rams facing a tough Shady Spring, WV team from the southern part of the state. This was their third tournament of the young season and they had placed 1st and 3rd. It was a close match throughout and it can down to the wire. Southern pulled off a 35-34 victory in the opening round.
It got tougher from there. Next up for the Rams was Eastern View, VA from caul pepper, VA. This team boasted a number of returning state place winners and was solid from top to bottom. Southern hung tough and wrestled hard but lost the match 48-21.
Round three would not get much easier. The Rams faced the host school in the next round and it was another tough, physical battle. The match was close from beginning to end with Southern trailing by one point heading into the final bout that featured two of the best wrestlers in the tournament. For Southern it was Austin Shaffer and for Musselman, Brad Derito. Shaffer was able to take a 4-1 lead early but Derito fought back to take a lead of his own. In the end, Derito was able to hang on and take the 9-8 decision and seal the 40-36 win for the Applemen.
"It was a little unfortunate that we had to face Musselman directly after wrestling teams like Eastern View and Shady Spring," stated Coach Taylor. "It was a tough start but the kids wrestled hard and responded well".
In round four, Southern started their string of 6 straight wins by defeating Jefferson, WV 58-22 to finish he day 2-2. The tournament resumed on Saturday morning with a match against James Wood, VA. The Rams picked up where they left off the night before, defeating the Colonials 52-21. In round 6, it was another AAA southern West Virginia team, Riverside, that gave the Rams a solid challenge. In the end, Southern was able to keep the winning streak going with a 45-33 victory.
Round seven saw the Rams face Hedgesville, WV and proved to be the most convincing win of the season for Southern. With 11 pins and one major decision, Southern won big by the score of 70-12. Southern finished the day with solid wins over Clarke Co.,VA 48-27 and over Winfield, WV 42-33. Winfield had defeated Southern in this tournament last season.

Flattening The Falcons
The Southern Rams took the mat Monday evening in a match against Frankfort High School from Short Gag, WV. The 3-0 Rams set out to keep the undefeated season alive and had little trouble accomplishing that task. In the end, Southern scored a huge 65-12 win which included 7 wins by pin.
The match started at 132 with freshman Jimmy Schwab. Jimmy dominated the match and picked up the tech fall giving Southern a 5-0 lead. At 138, another freshman hit the mat. Erik Fike wasted no time in pinning his Falcon opponent, extending Southern's lead to 11-0. Tanner Massey added a pin at 145 and the Rams were off to a great start.
Justyce Fulmer was next at 152 and controlled his man throughout the match and earned a 9-2 victory. Senior co-captains Will Foulke and Seth Kisner added pins at 160 and 170 and the rout was on, bringing the team score to 32-0. Frankfort picked up their first win at 182 as Dalton Cooper lost for the first time of the season. Brian Rinker was given a forfeit at 195 giving the Rams a 38-6 lead.
The marque match-up of the evening was at 215. Senior Keith Chapman spent most almost the entire match behind after giving up 5 early points. Keith fought back and earned the come-from-behind victory in the third period. Sophomore Marcus Tichinel picked up his second pin of the season at 285 and the Rams led 47-6 going into the lower weights.
The Falcons chose to forfeit to Devan Hamrick at 106 and they picked up their final win of the evening at 113. At 120, Austin Shaffer earned another pin and junior Josh King scored his team-leading 4th pin of the young season to close out the 65-12 victory for the Rams.
Remaining unbeaten for Southern were Devan Hamrick, Austin Shaffer, Josh King and Seth Kisner. There is a long list of Rams sitting at 3-1 after the first four matches. Up next, the Southern Rams travel to Musselman this weekend for a tough dual meet tournament starting on Friday afternoon.

Senior Focus - Will Foulke

Senior Will Foulke has been a member of the Southern Garrett wrestling team for all four years of high school. Will has also competed as a member of the football, cross country and soccer teams. This season, he was selected by his teammates as a team captain and has emerged as a great team leader. Will has gained valuable varsity experience during his sophomore and junior years and will make a strong impact for the Rams this season as a senior.
Q&A with Will Foulke
- When did you start wrestling? "I joined the team as a freshman. I was heavier and I thought it would be a great sport to get in shape and lose a little weight."
- Why did you stick with wrestling? "Like most wrestlers, I fell in love with the sport. I got in shape, lost some weight and loved the one-on-one competition as well as the whole team aspect. I also love the teammates and how well everyone on the team gets along and works hard to help each other out."
- How heavy were you? "As a freshman, I was around 170-180 pounds and as a sophomore I was up to nearly 200. This season, I am wrestling at 160."
- How did you do it? "I worked hard in the practice room and running and I changed my diet. During my sophomore year, I became a vegetarian and now I am a vegan. I feel healthier and so much better."
- Who inspires you? "My teammates inspire me every day. We work hard together and push each other to be better wrestlers and better teammates."
What wrestler do you admire the most? "I would have to say Bubba Scheffel. He was in my weight class when I was a freshman and he was the BMOC and a state champion. Since he was around my weight, he helped me in the practice room and at matches."- What goals have you set? "I want to do my best, stay on weight and go as far as I can this season. As a team captain, I want to help inspire and push my teammates to reach their goals as well."
- Who would you like to thank? "I want to thank my parents, teammates, coaches and anyone who has helped Southern Wrestling and my wrestling career. This is a great sport and a great team and I want to thank everyone who helped make it that way."
- What advice do you have for your teammates? "Stick it out through the tough times, it always gets better. Wrestling will get you in shape and will improve your work ethic in sports, in school and in life. Plus, it's a great outlet for stress and aggression."
- Do you have any words of wisdom? "Stay confident and you can achieve anything!"

Swatting Hornets
It was another successful night on the mat at Southern High School as the Southern Garrett Rams swatted the Hyndman Hornets 60-15 on Wednesday evening. The Rams moved to 3-0 on the season with the convincing win.
Wrestling started at 120 with senior, co-captain, state champion Austin Shaffer dominating his Hyndman opponent on his way to an 18-3 tech fall. Junior Josh King picked up his 3rd pin of the young season to give Southern an 11-0 lead. The Hornets forfeited the next three weights, giving the free passes to Jimmy Schwab, Erik Fike and Tanner Massey to extend the lead to 29-0.
At 152, senior, co-captain Justyce Fulmer controlled his man and came away with a solid 11-4 major decision. Will Foulke and Seth Kisner received two more forfeits and the team score moved to 45-0. At 182, junior Dalton Cooper took the mat in a rematch from last season. Cooper was able to score a late takedown in the third period to pick up his third win of the season and remain unbeaten.
Senior Brian Rinker had the privilege of wrestling Hyndman's team leader and best wrestler. Rinker wrestled well and kept it close for awhile, but the Hornet was able to get a last second pin to score Hyndman's first points of the night. Keith Chapman was awarded a forfeit and Marcus Tichinel was pinned and the Rams took a 54-12 lead into the lower weights.
At 106, Devan Hamrick picked up his third win of the season with a first period pin. In the final bout of the evening, freshman George Zimmerman was matched up against an experienced junior from Hyndman. Zimmerman wrestled great against the older, more experienced wrestler and kept it close the whole match. In the end, the Hornet was able to hold on and take a 9-8 decision over George, making the final score Southern 60 - Hyndman 15.
Moving to 3-0 on the young season were Devan Hamrick, Austin Shaffer, Josh King, Seth Kisner and Dalton Cooper. The Rams are in action again on Monday evening against Frankfort in a match that will be wrestled at Northern High School. Wrestling begins at 6pm.

Saturday, December 7th was opening day for the 2013/2014 Southern Ram wrestling team. The season began with a solid test in a tri-match against the Oakdale Bears from Frederick and the Allegany Campers from Cumberland. The Rams also began the season in search of the 200th win of Coach Taylor's career. It was an action packed evening of wrestling that lasted nearly 6 hours and in the end, the Rams brought home their first two wins of the season and wins #200 and #201 for Coach Taylor and the staff.
The first match of the evening was with Oakdale. The Bears were a tough, well-coached team who placed ahead of the Rams at last season regional tournament. They had a number of returning starters and a returning state champion. The match started at 138 and Oakdale quickly took the lead. Freshman Jimmy Schwab made his debut for the Rams and fought hard to avoid the pin, but drop the match by tech fall. Tanner Massey responded for the Rams, picking up a first period pin to give his team a 6-5 advantage. Justyce Fulmer and Will Foulke lost in the next two bouts and the Bears were back on top 15-6.

The Rams stepped it up and reeled off 9 straight wins to put the match away. Senior Seth Kisner and sophomore Corey Horner picked up big pins for the Rams and Dalton Cooper won a tough 2-1 decision and Southern was rolling. Brian Rinker squeaked out an overtime decision and Keith Chapman finished off the upper weights with a pin and the Rams took a 30-15 lead into the lower weights.
It was more of the same after making the turn. Devan Hamrick won by decision, freshman George Zimmerman won in overtime 8-6 and Austin Shaffer and Josh King earned pins to extend the team's lead to 48-15 heading into the final match. In that final bout, freshman Erik Fike faced defending state champion Anthony Savage and fought hard, fighting off the pin on his way to a tech fall loss. The Rams won 48-20 and handed Coach Taylor his 200th win.
After a lengthy delay, the Rams were back in action against the host school, the Allegany Campers. The match started at 152 with Justyce Fulmer picking up a quick pin. Will Foulke won by decision and Seth Kisner picked up another pin and the Rams were off to a 15-0 start. Corey Horner was down 6-0 and came storming back to make it 6-5 but was unable to turn his man in the third period and dropped the decision. Dalton Cooper earned a fall for the Rams and Keith Chapman was dominating his Camper opponent when he was caught in a throw in the third period and was pinned.
At 285, Marcus Tichinel made his season debut with an exciting heavyweight bout. Marcus earned the takedown and was working for the half when his opponent started to stand up. Tichinel quickly hooked up a cradle and it was "game over". As the official slapped the mat for the pin, the crowd went wild celebrating Marcus' first win of the season. The Rams led 27-9 heading into the lower weights. The next six matches were all Southern. Devan Hamrick, Josh King and Erik Fike all picked up pins while George Zimmerman, Austin Shaffer and Jimmy Schwab were awarded forfeits. In the final bout of the evening, Tanner Massey lost a tough 4-2 decision, making the final team score Southern 63 - Allegany 12.
The Rams move to 2-0 on the young season and are back in action Tuesday evening vs. Frankfort in a match that will be wrestled at Northern Garrett at 6pm.

After the first 5 bouts, the white team had built an impressive 22-3 lead with pins by Shaffer, Devan Hamrick and Keith Chapman and a major decision by Kisner. The red team would battle back, winning 6 of the next 10 bouts, receiving pins from Josh King and Brad Clary and major decisions from Will Foulke and George Zimmerman.
The evening ended with one of the most exciting bouts of the day. Newcomers Ty Artice and Jake Kosiarski went head to head in the final match. Both of these new wrestlers fought hard and did so many of the new moves they had just learned. The match went back and forth with the momentum shifting nearly every 30 seconds. In a flurry of action at the end, Artice was able to tie the score and send the bout into overtime. In the extra period, Artice came out on top with a takedown to pick up the win for The Pretty Boyz.

The start of the 2013/2014 begins on Saturday, December 7th with a tri match vs. Oakdale from Frederick and Allegany from Cumberland. Wrestling begins at 4pm in Cumberland. The Ram wrestling team finished the season 12-2 last year and just missed a trip to the regional duals. Five starters from last year's team were lost to graduation, but the team has reloaded and is looking forward to another winning season. Cooper McCauley, Zach Tichnell, Johnny Lascaris, Stephen Collins and state placewinner Scott Cooper all graduated and moved on in their lives.
Returning to lead the team on the mat this season is senior Austin Shaffer who is a 3-time state qualifier, placing 3rd in '13 and was state champion in '12. Joining Shaffer is senior state qualifier Tanner Massey and a long list of other seniors looking to join those two at the state tournament in March. Seth Kisner, Will Foulke, Brian Rinker and Justyce Fulmer join Shaffer and Massey as team captains this season and Keith Chapman, Ty Artice, Brad Clary and Austin Glotfelty round out an amazing group of seniors.
Joining the seniors in the quest to help the team win another state championship are juniors Josh King, Tristan Newcomb, Dalton Cooper and Jake Kosiarski, sophomores Devan Hamrick, Ethan Bittinger, Jacob Zimmerman, Marcus Tichinel, Trenten Friend and Corey Horner and freshmen George Zimmerman, Jimmy Schwab and Erik Fike. "These boys have been working very hard and are ready to get this thing started. Each and every kids on this team will play an important role in the success of the Southern Rams this season" said Coach Tim Rush.
"It's going to be a great year, but there are a lot of tough teams on our schedule" stated Coach Dave Taylor. "It starts this weekend with a team (Oakdale) who placed ahead of us at regionals last year. Wrestling them, along with a vastly improved Allegany team, is a great way to start the season" he added. "Also looking strong this year are Northern, Mt Ridge, Williamsport and Keyser and each of our three tournaments will provide great challenges for our team and each wrestler individually."
"We have such a strong core of team leaders and talented wrestlers. There is no doubt we are going to have an outstanding season and it's going to be a lot of fun" commented Coach Dan Clark.
