Iced

There was some great head-to-head competition in the Igloo last night
The Southern Rams made their annual trip to the Igloo on Thursday night to take on the Northern Huskies on their home mat in front of a packed house.  The fans were treated to some outstanding matches and witnessed excellent wrestling on both sides.
Chris Mersing battles for position
The evening started with some great youth matches.  Both mat clubs are full of very good wrestlers and are great organizations feeding the local high schools with skilled wrestlers.  Before the varsity began, the Rams and Huskies split a pair of JV matches.  Southern's Evan Paugh came out on top with a pin at 120 and the Ram's Chris Mersing lost a close decision.
Brogan Kealy with the first match of the night
The varsity match started at 120 where freshman Brogan Kealy moved up from 113 to fill in for Joey McComas who was home sick.  Kealy put up a fight against his older, bigger opponent, but fell short and the Huskies captured an early 3-0 lead.  Senior Jake E. Sweitzer wasted little time putting the Rams in front as he pinned his Husky foe in the first period.  Northern tied up the score by earning a decision at 132, and the Rams pulled back in front with a decision of their own at 138.
Jake W Sweitzer with a solid win vs Kelly
The Rams and Huskies traded pins at 145 and 152 and Southern had a slight lead 15-12 as the match moved into the higher weights.  Southern would pull away and ice the match by winning 5 of the next six bouts.  Victories by Declan McCann, Alec Horner, Joe Embleton, Hunter Park and Cole Sweitzer brought the team score to 42-18 with only the two lightest weight classes remaining.
Jace Guy with a first period pin
At 106, freshman Colum McCann lost a hard-fought battle and at 113, freshman Elisha Skipper wrestled his varsity match ever and won in impressive fashion, scoring a 16-0 tech fall in less than 2 minutes.  Skipper's win brought the final team score to 47-22 in favor of the visiting Southern Rams.
Senior Alec Horner in control
The win moved the team's overall season record to 23-2 with a perfect 9-0 record in MPSSAA dual meet competition.  The Rams are back in action tomorrow as the Fort Hill Super Duals tournament will be wrestled in Cumberland.  Wrestling begins at 11am.

Double The Fun

Brad Davis picks up a pin vs. Keyser
Despite the cold, snowy start to the day, the tri match at home vs. Keyser and Fort Hill went on as scheduled.  The Sentinels and Golden Tornado made the trip to Oakland to battle the Rams under the spotlight in this annual event.  The first match of the evening was between the two visiting teams with Keyser coming out on top.
Jace Guy makes life hard for his opponents
First up for Southern was the team from Fort Hill high school.  The match started at 182 where Kris Tusing received a forfeit for the Rams.  Fort Hill won the next two bouts and took a brief 7-6 lead.  Southern was able to win 7 of the next 8 matches with 5 of those wins coming by pin to build an insurmountable 48-13 advantage.  The Rams picked up a couple more wins and finished with a 60-16 win over the Fort Hill Sentinels.
Cole Sweitzer with a pin vs Keyser
Next up for the Rams were the Golden Tornado from Keyser high school.  The names and faces were different, but the results were pretty much the same.  Southern took an early 19-0 lead by winning each of the first four bouts before Keyser got on the scoreboard.  The visiting team scored quick pins at 113 and 120 to close the gap to 19-12, but that was the end of their scoring for the evening.  The Rams won the final 8 bouts to bring the final score to 61-12 in favor of the host school.  There were two premier matchups in the match vs Keyser pitting top Rams against the top Golden Tornado.  At 145, Southern's Jace Guy controlled Bryant Dixong for a 6-0 win and Southern' s Joe Embleton did the same at 170, topping Shayden Daugherty 6-1.
Nathan Sweitzer with the most exciting win of the night
The Southern Rams are now 22-2 on the season and turn right around to take on the Northern Huskies tonight in Accident.  Wrestling begins at 7pm.

A Winning Week

Freshman Colum McCann gets thing started with a pin vs Century
The Southern Ram wrestlers picked up three more wins last week to move our record to 20-2 overall and 6-0 in MPSSAA dual meet competition.  The week started with a trip to Oakdale High School in New Market for a tri match with the host school and the Century Knights.
Junior Jace Guy vs. Oakdale
First up was Century where the Rams picked up 11 victories out of the 14 matches with 5 of the wins coming by pin.  Against Oakdale, pins were scarce  but the Rams won 8 of 14 bouts to cruise to a 39-25 victory.
Senior Jake E. Sweitzer, moments before finishing off his Oakdale opponent
The following day, Southern hosted the Frankfort Falcons who could only bring four wrestlers.  The Rams won three of the four bouts wrestled and accepted 10 forfeits on the way to a 77-4 win.  Frankfort senior Austin Pumphrey was the lone winner for the Falcons and scored his 150th career victory in that match.

Cross-County Clash

Alec Horner, one of 10 winners vs. Northern
There was a slight break in the bad weather on Wednesday evening, just enough to allow the Northern Huskies to make it to the Ram Arena for the first of two matches between the Southern Rams and the Huskies.  Last season, the teams split matches and the home team remembered very clearly the loss that occurred under the spotlight last season.  Southern entered the match with a 16-2 record on the season, looking to keep the 12 match win streak alive.
Cole Sweitzer with the quickest pin of the night, only 22 seconds
The match started at the 285 pound weight class and Cole Sweitzer wasted no time in giving the Rams an early 6-0 lead after pinning his opponent in only 22 seconds.  Northern got on the board with a decision at 106, but after a forfeit at 113 and pins at 120 and 126, Southern held a 24-3 lead.  At 132, junior Nate Tasker faced off against a very talented Hunter Wilhelm from Northern.  It was a tough match and in the end, Wilhelm used his two 1st period takedowns to cruise to a 5-2 victory.
Nate Tasker vs. Hunter Wilhelm
Jake W. Sweitzer picked up a 4-2 decision at 138 and Michael Moon lost at 145.  The team score was 27-11 and set up the marquis match-up of the evening at 152.  Unbeaten junior Jace Guy, who placed 5th at last season's state tournament bumped up from 145 to take on state runner-up Jordan Day from Northern.  It was a great battle and Day took advantage of every opportunity he had to cruise to an 11-2 win.  Bradley Davis won a wild 15-6 major decision at 160 and the Rams led 31-15.
A great battle but Day comes out on top.
Senior co-captains Alec Horner and Joe Embleton also bumped up to a higher weight class for the evening match.  Each picked up big pins for the Rams but not before there were some wild flurries of action that saw the home standing grapplers in a perilous positions that they were able to fight through and ultimately finish the Huskies off.  The Rams led 43-15.
Senior Brad Davis under the spotlight with a big win
Nathan Sweitzer accepted a forfeit at 195 and Hunter Park scored a first period pin at 220 to finish off the Huskies.  The final score was 55-15 in favor of the Rams and brought the team's win streak to 13.  The Super Duals at Fort Hill scheduled for this weekend has already been cancelled, so next up for Southern is a trip to Oakdale on Tuesday for the make-up tri with the Bears and Century.
All smiles for the Rams on this night.  Hunter Park finishes it off.
