2014 Bi-Counties

It was a very good day at Southern High School on Saturday as the Rams hosted the annual Bi-County tournament.  Entering the tournament, it was clear that the Rams would battle the Mt Ridge Miners for the title.  The Miners had defeated the Rams in two close dual meets earlier in the season and the results of Bi-Counties would be the same.

In the early rounds, Southern kept the tournament close.  Mt. Ridge placed 11 wrestlers in the finals and Southern was close behind with 10 finalists.  There were a number of head to head match ups and the tournament was on the line.  The Miners had the lead and the Rams were in second place.

The finals began at 106 with Southern's Devan Hamrick scoring a first period pin vs a Mt Ridge wrestler.  At 113, Austin Shaffer added a first period pin of his own against a wrestler from Northern Garrett and the Rams were closing the gap.  At 120, Josh King lost a decision to Matthews from Mt Ridge to give the Miners their first champion of the day.  Jimmy Schwab won a decision at 132 against a Northern Garrett wrestler and the Rams were still alive.

Unfortunately, Schwab's victory would be the last for Southern at Bi-Counties as the final 7 Ram finalists would lose their matches.  Josh King, Justyce Fulmer, Will Foulke, Seth Kisner, Dalton Cooper, Brian Rinker and Keith Chapman all reached the finals but dropped their matches to place second.  In the end, the Mt Ridge Miners would capture the Bi-County title by scoring 223 points to Southern's 179 points.

2014 Regional Duals

For the 10th time in the last 12 years, the Southern Rams qualified for the regional dual meet tournament.  The top four teams in the region qualify and the Rams entered as the #4 seed, facing top seeded Mt. Ridge in the opening round.  The two teams had met a week earlier and the result was a tight 34-30 victory for the Miners.  Monday's meeting would turn out to be equally tight.

The match began at 170 with a battle of senior team captains.  The Miners would prevail by pin and take the early 6-0 lead.  Senior Seth Kisner would get the Rams on the board at 182 with a decision.  Mt. Ridge would score another pin at 195 to stretch their lead to 12-3.  Brian Rinker won by decision at 220 and Keith Chapman earned a pin at 285 and the score was tied at 12 as the match headed to the lighter weights.

Sophomore Devan Hamrick gave the Rams the lead with a pin at 106 but the Miners tied it back up with a pin of their own at 113.  The team traded forfeits at 120 and 126 in strategic moves to keep the score tied 24-24 with 5 matches remaining.  The Miners took the lead with a decision at 132 but the Rams tied it back up with a Jimmy Schwab overtime victory at 138.

Mt. Ridge took the lead for good with a big win at 145 and only two matches remaining.  Unfortunately, Southern had to forfeit one of those two, so the match was out of reach.  Justyce Fulmer won by forfeit to end the match with the Mt. Ridge Miners earning the 36-33 victory and the spot in the regional dual finals (which they would win later that evening).

By A Whisker

The Southern Rams traveled to Williamsport High School on Saturday to take on the 10-3 Williamsport Wildcats in the final dual meet of the regular season.  The Cats have a strong program and everyone knew it would be a tight, exciting match.  The Rams entered the match at 12-1 and needed a win to secure the 2nd seed in Wednesday's regional duals.

The match began at 106 and the result was the same as in most matches this season.  Sophomore Devan Hamrick picked up a pin and gave the Rams a 6-0 lead.  Beginning at 113, we made the decision to bump our wrestlers up a weight class to fill in an open spot in an upper weight class.  We forfeited at 113 and the score was tied at 6.  Freshman George Zimmerman wrestled at 120 and kept the match close until getting overpowered near the end and lost by pin with only a few seconds remaining in the match.

Senior Austin Shaffer took the mat at 126 and won by major decision bringing the team score to 12-10 in Williamsport's favor.  At 132, junior Josh King lost a decision in the higher weight class extending the Cat's lead to 15-10.  Freshman Jimmy Schwab entered his match at 138 against one of Williamsport's top wrestlers, senior Brian Davis.  Early in the match, Davis was called for an illegal slam, bringing Schwab to the mat head first.  We chose to focus on the health and safety of our wrestler and did not allow Schwab to continue.

Ethan Bittinger lost by pin at 145 and Tanner Massey got the Rams back on the board with a pin of his own at 152 giving the Rams a 22-21 lead.  At 160, senior Will Foulke added another pin to add to Southern's lead.  Seth Kisner did the same at 170 and the Rams were on top 34-21 with 4 matches to go.  We only needed to win one of the next four to clinch the victory.

Brian Rinker wrestled at 182 and was in a tight match.  Down by two with time running out, Rinker was able to escape then quickly attack and took his opponent down as time expired but it was ruled his knee was out of bounds and the match ended with Rinker losing the decision.  At 195, Dalton Cooper faced another of Williamsport's top wrestlers.  In a match similar to Jimmy Schwab's match, Cooper was illegally slammed to the mat by his opponent and was awarded a point and began recovery time.  Luckily, this was not a head injury so the decision was made to continue wrestling despite a foot injury.  Cooper lost by major decision in a gutsy match and the Ram's lead was cut to 34-28 with two matches remaining.

Senior Keith Chapman wrestled one of Williamsport senior captains and the match was close throughout.  In the end, the Wildcat wrestler earned the decision and cut Southern's lead to 34-31 with only the 285 bout remaining.  At heavyweight, sophomore Marcus Tichinel faced another senior captain and was unable to pull out the win for the Rams.  The match ended with the Williamsport Cats winning by a whisker 37-34.

The loss dropped the Rams to the number 4 seed in Wednesday's regional duals. We will face Mt Ridge in the semi-final round while Middletown will face North Carroll in the other semi match.  Wrestling begins at 5:30 at Mt Ridge and the winners will meet in the finals at 7:30pm.  The winner of Wednesday's regional duals will advance to the state duals which will be held at North Point High School next Saturday.

Senior "Class"

Senior Night panoramic
It was senior night at Southern High School on Thursday evening and there was a lot on the line.  The 12-0 Rams had a huge match schedules against the 12-0 Mt Ridge Miners.  The winner of the match would earn the honor of being the #1 seed in the west region and would host the duals this coming Wednesday evening.  As expected, this heavyweight battle would come down to the last match of the evening.

The match started at 170 with two senior captains squaring off.  Mt. Ridge's Tyler Maynard broke a scoreless match with a reversal in the third period to win a 3-0 decision over Seth Kisner.  The Rams got on the board at 182 when Dalton Cooper pinned his opponent in the 3rd period to give his team a 6-3 lead.  The lead didn't last long as the Miners got a pin at 195 to move back on top.

Back and forth was the theme of the evening.  At 220, Southern regained the lead with a Keith Chapman pin in the first period.  The Rams took a 12-9 lead into 285.  In the heavyweight division, Marcus Tichinel fell behind early then battled back but ultimately fell short, losing a decision and the team score was tied at 12.

At 106, Devan Hamrick did what he has done all season, win by pin.  The Rams lead 18-12.  Freshman George Zimmerman, who had just won his 20th match of the season earlier in the evening, lost a close decision at 113.  The Miners forfeited to Austin Shaffer at 120 (the home crowd was not very happy!) and Southern led 24-15.

Josh King took the mat at 126 and squared off against Cody Matthews, a state placewinner from last season.  Josh wrestled a great match but gave up a takedown at the very end of the first period that proved to be the difference.  The Rams still clung to a 24-18 lead.  Mt Ridge got a pin at 132 to tie the score at 24 then they took the lead 27-24 at 138 with a close decision over freshman Jimmy Schwab.

Senior Tanner Massey quickly put the Rams back on top with a first period pin and everyone knew it was coming down to the wire.  At 152, Adam Martz scored a major decision over Justyce Fulmer and the stage was set.  In the final match of the evening, senior Will Foulke wrestled senior Nick Shifflett and Shifflett was able to win the decision and clinch the 34-30 victory for his team.

Prior to the Mt. Ridge match, the Rams wrestled Martinsburg and scored a lopsided 69-12 victory.  We also honored our seniors on Thursday.  Ty Artice, Brad Clary, Brian Rinker, Keith Chapman, Will Foulke, Justyce Fulmer, Tanner Massey, Seth Kisner and Austin Shaffer are in their final year at Southern and we will post a separate article recapping their senior night celebration.

In the end, the Rams lost a 34-30 match to Mt Ridge but the boys handled the defeat with such grace and class the entire gym complimented this on our outstanding behavior and great sportsmanship.  Despite the extreme level of pressure and energy, the Southern Ram wrestlers handled themselves like men.  The fans were amazing and the place was LOUD and this was a dual meet that will go down in history as a great high school wrestling match!
