That's More Like It

Everyone who has ever been camping knows, sometimes everything goes well and sometimes it's a terrible experience.  Back in December, the Southern Rams wrestled the Campers of Allegany and it was one of those horrible experiences.  We lost matches we should have won, we got pinned in matches that should have been closer and we forfeited two weight classes.  In the end that night, the Rams lost a heartbreaking match 34-31.  Yesterday, at Southern High School, our Camping experience was nearly perfect, quite different than the last meeting.  By the end of the day, the Southern Rams outscored Allegany 64-15 for the decisive victory.

The rematch on Saturday began at 220 with David Lewis for the Rams coming up short against the Campers grappler.  At 285, Jake Zimmerman tied up the team score at 6 with his second straight 1st period pin.  This time around, the Campers were the ones forfeiting weight classes as the entered no wrestler in three of the next four weight.  Brison Dixon, Zach Burgess and Devan Hamrick were awarded the wins and Jake Sweitzer added a quick pin at 120 and the rout was on.  Southern led 30-6.

Senior Josh King dominated his opponent with a 14-3 major decision at 132 and at 138, freshman Alec Horner filled the spot like a pro as he earned the fall in just 20 seconds.  The Rams led 40-6 and up next was the afternoon's marquis matchup.

Jimmy Schwab moved up from 138 to tangle with Stosick from Allegany at 145.  Schwab scored a takedown in the first period with his favorite move and rode out Stosick for a 2-0 lead heading into the second.  Stosick chose bottom and after Jimmy put him on his back, it became evident that the Allegany wrestler was injured and could not continue, giving Schwab the victory by default.  Joey Embleton also wrestled a higher weigh class and lost a tough 2-0 decision, bringing the team score to 46-9 in Southern's favor.

Corey Horner pinned his opponent at 160 and Allegany won by pin at 170 which led to one of the most exciting matches of the afternoon at 182.  Junior Matt Jones faced the coach's son from Allegany and early on, the Camper had the advantage.  In the third period, down 5-1, Jones kept fighting from the bottom and was able to get the reversal and put his opponent on his back.  It wasn't long before the official slapped the mat and Matt let out  scream of joy becoming the winner by fall.  Senior Dalton Cooper closed out the scoring by winning by pin as well bringing the final team score to 64-15 in favor of the home standing Southern Rams.
