The Campers and Bears

"Let's get this thing started!"

Saturday, December 7th was opening day for the 2013/2014 Southern Ram wrestling team.  The season began with a solid test in a tri-match against the Oakdale Bears from Frederick and the Allegany Campers from Cumberland.  The Rams also began the season  in search of the 200th win of Coach Taylor's career.  It was an action packed evening of wrestling that lasted nearly 6 hours and in the end, the Rams brought home their first two wins of the season and wins #200 and #201 for Coach Taylor and the staff.

 

The first match of the evening was with Oakdale.  The Bears were a tough, well-coached team who placed ahead of the Rams at last season regional tournament.  They had a number of returning starters and a returning state champion.  The match started at 138 and Oakdale quickly took the lead.  Freshman Jimmy Schwab made his debut for the Rams and fought hard to avoid the pin, but drop the match by tech fall.  Tanner Massey responded for the Rams, picking up a first period pin to give his team a 6-5 advantage.  Justyce Fulmer and Will Foulke lost in the next two bouts and the Bears were back on top 15-6.

 

A little fun in warm-ups

The Rams stepped it up and reeled off 9 straight wins to put the match away.  Senior Seth Kisner and sophomore Corey Horner picked up big pins for the Rams and Dalton Cooper won a tough 2-1 decision and Southern was rolling.  Brian Rinker squeaked out an overtime decision and Keith Chapman finished off the upper weights with a pin and the Rams took a 30-15 lead into the lower weights.

 

It was more of the same after making the turn.  Devan Hamrick won by decision, freshman George Zimmerman won in overtime 8-6 and Austin Shaffer and Josh King earned pins to extend the team's lead to 48-15 heading into the final match.  In that final bout, freshman Erik Fike faced defending state champion Anthony Savage and fought hard, fighting off the pin on his way to a tech fall loss.  The Rams won 48-20 and handed Coach Taylor his  200th win.

 

After a lengthy delay, the Rams were back in action against the host school, the Allegany Campers.  The match started at 152 with Justyce Fulmer picking up a quick pin.  Will Foulke won by decision and Seth Kisner picked up another pin and the Rams were off to a 15-0 start.  Corey Horner was down 6-0 and came storming back to make it 6-5 but was unable to turn his man in the third period and dropped the decision.  Dalton Cooper earned a fall for the Rams and Keith Chapman was dominating his Camper opponent when he was caught in a throw in the third period and was pinned.

 

At 285, Marcus Tichinel made his season debut with an exciting heavyweight bout.  Marcus earned the takedown and was working for the half when his opponent started to stand up.  Tichinel quickly hooked up a cradle and it was "game over".  As the official slapped the mat for the pin, the crowd went wild celebrating Marcus' first win of the season.  The Rams led 27-9 heading into the lower weights.  The next six matches were all Southern.  Devan Hamrick, Josh King and Erik Fike all picked up pins while George Zimmerman, Austin Shaffer and Jimmy Schwab were awarded forfeits.  In the final bout of the evening, Tanner Massey lost a tough 4-2 decision, making the final team score Southern 63 - Allegany 12.

 

The Rams move to 2-0 on the young season and are back in action Tuesday evening vs. Frankfort in a match that will be wrestled at Northern Garrett at 6pm.
