It was another successful night on the mat at Southern High School as the Southern Garrett Rams swatted the Hyndman Hornets 60-15 on Wednesday evening. The Rams moved to 3-0 on the season with the convincing win.
Wrestling started at 120 with senior, co-captain, state champion Austin Shaffer dominating his Hyndman opponent on his way to an 18-3 tech fall. Junior Josh King picked up his 3rd pin of the young season to give Southern an 11-0 lead. The Hornets forfeited the next three weights, giving the free passes to Jimmy Schwab, Erik Fike and Tanner Massey to extend the lead to 29-0.
At 152, senior, co-captain Justyce Fulmer controlled his man and came away with a solid 11-4 major decision. Will Foulke and Seth Kisner received two more forfeits and the team score moved to 45-0. At 182, junior Dalton Cooper took the mat in a rematch from last season. Cooper was able to score a late takedown in the third period to pick up his third win of the season and remain unbeaten.
Senior Brian Rinker had the privilege of wrestling Hyndman's team leader and best wrestler. Rinker wrestled well and kept it close for awhile, but the Hornet was able to get a last second pin to score Hyndman's first points of the night. Keith Chapman was awarded a forfeit and Marcus Tichinel was pinned and the Rams took a 54-12 lead into the lower weights.
At 106, Devan Hamrick picked up his third win of the season with a first period pin. In the final bout of the evening, freshman George Zimmerman was matched up against an experienced junior from Hyndman. Zimmerman wrestled great against the older, more experienced wrestler and kept it close the whole match. In the end, the Hornet was able to hold on and take a 9-8 decision over George, making the final score Southern 60 - Hyndman 15.
Moving to 3-0 on the young season were Devan Hamrick, Austin Shaffer, Josh King, Seth Kisner and Dalton Cooper. The Rams are in action again on Monday evening against Frankfort in a match that will be wrestled at Northern High School. Wrestling begins at 6pm.
