The Southern Rams took the mat last night in their home opener against the Frankfort Falcons in front of a packed house.  In addition to the dual meet, the Southern Mat Club hosted the Frankfort and Northern Mat Clubs in a night filled with great wrestling.

The main event between Southern and Frankfort began at 160 with Corey Horner receiving a forfeit in his first match back from injury.  Frankfort also forfeited at 170 and 182 to Bernie Sislo and Matt Jones and the rout was on.  John Mayne lost by pin at 195 and Dalton Cooper received another forfeit at 220 and the team score stood at 24-6.

Junior Jake Zimmerman took the mat at 285 and made quick work of his opponent, scoring a first period pin to extend Southern's lead to 30-6 heading into the lower weights.  At 106, Brison Dixon lost to one of Frankfort's top wrestlers, but not before exciting the crowd by nearly pinning his Falcon foe in a flurry of action.  Jake Sweitzer earned another pin at 113 and Zach Burgess lost at 120 bringing the team score to 36-17 in Southern's favor.

 

Junior Devan Hamrick would start a string of four straight at 126 by decking his opponent with a leg cradle in just 31 seconds.  Not to be outdone, Josh King scored his pin in just 26 seconds at 132 to stretch the lead to 48-17.  Jimmy Schwab won by fall at 138 and Joey Embleton won by tech fall at 145 to finish off the scoring for the Rams.  Ethan Bittinger lost by decision at 152 in a well wrestled match to bring the final team score to Southern 59 - Frankfort 20.
