Clawed

Corey Horner gets the Rams on the board with a pin.
It was a cold, snowy afternoon on the mountaintop, perfect for a clash between the undefeated Williamsport Wildcats and the 7-2 Southern Rams.  The Wildcats made the 2 1/2 hour bus ride through the snow squalls with the intent of keeping their record perfect.  The Rams had other plans.

Dalton Cooper picks up a pin for the Rams
The match started at 152 and the 'Cats took a quick lead as their senior captain earned a first period fall.  Southern tied the score at 6 with Corey Horner pinning his opponent at 160.  Williamsport won the next three bouts convincingly to pull ahead of the Rams 23-6 heading into the 220 pound class.  At 220, senior Dalton Cooper won by fall and Williamsport won by fall at 285, bringing the score to 29-12 heading into the lower weights.

Hamrick and Beckeley square off
The Wildcats stretched their lead with a pin at 106 and gave up a forfeit at 113 to make the team score 35-18 heading into the marquis match up of the day.  It was a battle of state place-winners and old friends at 120 when Devan Hamrick squared off with Justin Beckeley.  Hamrick was able to score a first period takedown to grab an early lead.  In the second period, Beckeley chose the bottom position and Hamrick was able to ride him out to take the 2-0 lead into the third period.  Hamrick selected bottom and earned a reversal and near fall points to claim the 6-0 victory in a very well wrestled match.

Ringy ding dinger, it's a pin by the Kinger
Southern was forced to forfeit at 126 before Josh King scored a second period pin at 132 to bring the team score to 41-27 with two bouts remaining.  At 138, Jimmy Schwab had a rematch against a Williamsport wrestler that he met at the Hub Cup earlier in the month.  It was a tight match throughout, but in the end, Schwab dropped a 2-0 decision.  In the final bout, Williamsport was able to earn a major decision the bring the final score to Williamsport 48 - Southern 27.

The Southern Rams are now 7-3 in dual meet competition and face another unbeaten team tonight as the Huskies of Northern Garrett come to town for a 7pm rivalry match on senior night.

Rams on a Roll

Brison Dixon pins twice for the Rams
The Southern Rams took the home mats against Fort Hill and Keyser on Wednesday evening for the 4th time in the past week and the outcome was the same, exciting Southern victories.  The Rams have now won 6 dual meets in a row and have extended the record to 7-2 on the season.

Corey Horner with 2 pins on the night
On Wednesday, Southern started with Fort Hill in a rematch for an earlier season tournament.  The Rams won easily in the earlier meeting and last night was no different.  Southern built a 35-0 lead by winning the first six bouts and cruised to a 68-9 victory over the Sentinals.  Winning by pin against Fort Hill were John Mayne, Brison Dixon, Jake Sweitzer, Devan Hamrick, Josh King, Ethan Bittinger and Corey Horner.  Dalton Cooper won by tech fall, Jimmy Schwab won by decision and Matt Jones, Bernie Sislo and David Lewis won via forfeit.

Devan Hamrick earns win #100
In the second match of the evening, the Rams faced off against a tough Keyser team and the match would prove to be much closer than the first, coming down to the final bout of the evening before the outcome was determined.  The match started at 220 and Keyser was able to jump out to a 12-0 lead by winning the first two bouts by pin.  At 106, Brison Dixon got the Rams on the board with a pin of his own and the ball was rolling.

Senior Josh King with another pin
Jake Sweitzer won for a the second time of the night at 113, winning a close decision against Keyser.  Zach Burgess was awarded a forfeit to give the Rams a 15-12 lead heading into the bout at 126.  Devan Hamrick entered the match with 99 career wins and was determined to reach the 100 win mark on his home mats.  The task would not be an easy one as Hamrick was squaring off against one of the Golden Tornado's top wrestlers.  In the end, Devan would dominate in his 100th win, defeating Whitlock 9-4 and extending Southern's lead to 18-12.

Jimmy Schwab earns the big 5-0
After Josh King was awarded a forfeit at 132, Jimmy Schwab took the mats in search of a plateau win of his own.  Jimmy, who is only a sophomore, entered the match with 49 wins in search of the big 5-0.  Schwab would also be challenged against a good wrestler but was also able to dominate and win a 5-3 decision.  The Rams lead was 27-12 but Keyser had the heart of their lineup on deck.

Dalton Cooper with the decisive pin
Freshman Joey Embleton faced senior Garrett Crites at 145 and wrestled a great match but dropped an 8-0 decision.  After Keyser won the next two bouts by pin, the Rams were behind 28-27 with three matches remaining.  Corey Horner bumped up to 170 and scored a first period pin to give the lead back to the Rams but Keyser retook the lead with a pin of their own at 182.

The stage was set for the final bout.  Keyser led 34-33 with Dalton Cooper up for Southern at 195 in the final match of the evening.  Dalton has been in this position before, winning the final match of the night for his team on Monday to clinch a victory for his team over Meyersdale.  Against Keyser, it didn't take long for everyone to realize the outcome would be the same.  Cooper scored the first takedown and went to work to secure the pin.  The fall came in just over 1 minute and the Rams would capture their 7th dual meet on the season with an exciting 39-34 victory.

Next up for Southern are the Williamsport Wildcats at home on Tuesday evening, in a match that had originally been scheduled for Jan. 31st but was moved to the 27th.

Monday Mat Madness

Devan Hamrick earned two wins on Monday evening
It was a bonus night of wrestling on the mats at Southern High School on Monday evening as the Rams played host to Hyndman and Meyersdale in a make-up match that had been scheduled last week in PA.  The Southern wrestlers gave the home fans their money's worth, winning both tight matches and hosting youth wrestlers from b all the schools as well.

Jimmy Schwab with two wins as well
The first match of the evening was between Southern and Hyndman.  The two teams had met at a tournament earlier in the season and the outcome was as close as it gets.  The match in early January ended in a tie with the Rams capturing the victory based on criteria.  The final outcome on Monday evening was exactly the same although the individual matches were quite different.  In the end, the Rams prevailed 37-36, winning again on criteria after a 36-36 deadlock to set up the second match of the evening vs. Meyersdale.

Brison Dixon in an earlier match vs Frankfort
It had been a couple years since the Rams have squared off with the Red Raiders, but is was the same tough PA school with all new faces.  Meyersdale won the opening bout by pin then the Rams reeled off six straight wins to take a 33-6 lead.  The Red Raiders closed the gap over the next 6 matches to bring the team score to 39-34 with one bout remaining.  Senior co-captain Dalton Cooper took the mat with the match on the line and performed like a team leader should, he took the lead and pinned his opponent early in the second period to seal the win for his team.

Southern is back in action tomorrow evening as we host another tri match starting at 6pm.  Fort Hill and Keyser come to town to tangle with the red-hot Rams.  Photos courtesy of Alex Flanigan from last week's Frankfort match.

That's More Like It

Everyone who has ever been camping knows, sometimes everything goes well and sometimes it's a terrible experience.  Back in December, the Southern Rams wrestled the Campers of Allegany and it was one of those horrible experiences.  We lost matches we should have won, we got pinned in matches that should have been closer and we forfeited two weight classes.  In the end that night, the Rams lost a heartbreaking match 34-31.  Yesterday, at Southern High School, our Camping experience was nearly perfect, quite different than the last meeting.  By the end of the day, the Southern Rams outscored Allegany 64-15 for the decisive victory.

The rematch on Saturday began at 220 with David Lewis for the Rams coming up short against the Campers grappler.  At 285, Jake Zimmerman tied up the team score at 6 with his second straight 1st period pin.  This time around, the Campers were the ones forfeiting weight classes as the entered no wrestler in three of the next four weight.  Brison Dixon, Zach Burgess and Devan Hamrick were awarded the wins and Jake Sweitzer added a quick pin at 120 and the rout was on.  Southern led 30-6.

Senior Josh King dominated his opponent with a 14-3 major decision at 132 and at 138, freshman Alec Horner filled the spot like a pro as he earned the fall in just 20 seconds.  The Rams led 40-6 and up next was the afternoon's marquis matchup.

Jimmy Schwab moved up from 138 to tangle with Stosick from Allegany at 145.  Schwab scored a takedown in the first period with his favorite move and rode out Stosick for a 2-0 lead heading into the second.  Stosick chose bottom and after Jimmy put him on his back, it became evident that the Allegany wrestler was injured and could not continue, giving Schwab the victory by default.  Joey Embleton also wrestled a higher weigh class and lost a tough 2-0 decision, bringing the team score to 46-9 in Southern's favor.

Corey Horner pinned his opponent at 160 and Allegany won by pin at 170 which led to one of the most exciting matches of the afternoon at 182.  Junior Matt Jones faced the coach's son from Allegany and early on, the Camper had the advantage.  In the third period, down 5-1, Jones kept fighting from the bottom and was able to get the reversal and put his opponent on his back.  It wasn't long before the official slapped the mat and Matt let out  scream of joy becoming the winner by fall.  Senior Dalton Cooper closed out the scoring by winning by pin as well bringing the final team score to 64-15 in favor of the home standing Southern Rams.

Freshman Joey Embleton is a scoring machine

The Southern Rams took the mat last night in their home opener against the Frankfort Falcons in front of a packed house.  In addition to the dual meet, the Southern Mat Club hosted the Frankfort and Northern Mat Clubs in a night filled with great wrestling.

Junior Devan Hamrick would start a string of four straight at 126 by decking his opponent with a leg cradle in just 31 seconds.  Not to be outdone, Josh King scored his pin in just 26 seconds at 132 to stretch the lead to 48-17.  Jimmy Schwab won by fall at 138 and Joey Embleton won by tech fall at 145 to finish off the scoring for the Rams.  Ethan Bittinger lost by decision at 152 in a well wrestled match to bring the final team score to Southern 59 - Frankfort 20.

Hammering at the Hub

2-time Hub Cup Champion, Devan Hamrick
For the second year in a row, the Southern Rams competed in the super-tough North Hagerstown Hup Cup wrestling tournament and for the second year in a row, Devan Hamrick was crowned champion of what many call the toughest tournament in the state.  It was a long weekend of great competition, and by 8pm on Saturday night, Devan's hand was raised in front of the packed gym.

Hamrick with a big win over the state's #1 ranked wrestler
The tournament brackets were filled with state ranked wrestlers and strong wrestlers from Virginia, Pennsylvania and several private schools.  Hamricks bracket was no exception.  Devan's first round match was against a tough private school kid from St. Pauls.  Hamrick dominated the match, winning 5-0 to advance to the second round where he picked up a 2nd period pin.  That win over Lukas Plank from St. James earned him a spot in the semis against the #1 ranked kid in the state, Tim Null from South Carroll.  Interestingly, Null was Austin Shaffer's opponent in last year's state final match which was won by Shaffer.

After a scoreless first period, Null chose bottom and Hamrick was able to ride him tough and as time expired in the 2nd, the score was still tied at 0.  Devan chose bottom in the third and was able to escape to take a 1-0 lead.  As time was winding down, Hamrick scored a takedown to extend the lead to 3-0 and rode out Null for the big win.  "I love being the underdog" Hamrick said before the match.  "All the pressure is on him, nobody is expecting me to win, I can just go out and wrestle." he added.  The win against Null earned him a spot in the finals for the second straight year.

Jimmy Schwab in control on his way to 4th place.
In the final match, Hamrick was facing a strong, tough, funky wrestler from Waynesboro, Pa named Austin Wise.  Wise won by fall in the semis after a crazy flurry of action with Wise ending on top.  I this last match, Devan was able to score a takedown and an escape and ride his opponent while on top.  In the third period, Hamrick scored a nice reversal and put Wise straight to his back looking for the pin.  As time expired, Devan was awarded 5 points for the 8-0 major decision victory and his second Hub Cup championship.

Joey Embleton heading for the pin
At 138, Jimmy Schwab entered the tournament with an impressive 15-4 record and was seeded third.  Schwab won his first two bouts handily to earn a spot in the semi finals against state runner-up, Hunter Faith from the host school.  Schwab wrestled hard, but was defeated by Faith who was crowned champion of the tournament later that evening.  In the consolation round, Jimmy scored an impressive victory against a private school wrestler to advance to the consi finals where he would face Tanner Canfield from Williamsport high school.   Canfield would win this bout 3-1 and Schwab would finish in fourth place at the Hub Cup.

Newcomer Patrick Duggan with 2 wins at the Hub Cup
Freshman Joey Embleton was able to win 3 out of 5 matches at the Hub Cup, all by pin, but fell short of placing at the tournament.  Sophomore Patrick Duggan won 2 out of 4 and also fell short of the podium.  Jake Sweitzer, Alec Horner, Josh King, Dalton Cooper and John Mayne each won 1 match before being eliminated from the event.  Brison Dixon, Ethan Bittinger, Bernie Sislo and David Lewis wrestled but were unable to win a match.

Overall, the Southern Rams placed 14th out of 22 teams at the 2015 North Hagerstown Hub Cup wrestling tournament.  It was a tough event but each Southern wrestler gained valuable experience, wrestling some of the best athletes in the tri-state area.  On Wednesday evening, the Rams begin a long home-stand when the Frankfort Falcons come to town.
