Alec Horner, one of 10 winners vs. Northern |
There was a slight break in the bad weather on Wednesday evening, just enough to allow the Northern Huskies to make it to the Ram Arena for the first of two matches between the Southern Rams and the Huskies. Last season, the teams split matches and the home team remembered very clearly the loss that occurred under the spotlight last season. Southern entered the match with a 16-2 record on the season, looking to keep the 12 match win streak alive.
Cole Sweitzer with the quickest pin of the night, only 22 seconds |
The match started at the 285 pound weight class and Cole Sweitzer wasted no time in giving the Rams an early 6-0 lead after pinning his opponent in only 22 seconds. Northern got on the board with a decision at 106, but after a forfeit at 113 and pins at 120 and 126, Southern held a 24-3 lead. At 132, junior Nate Tasker faced off against a very talented Hunter Wilhelm from Northern. It was a tough match and in the end, Wilhelm used his two 1st period takedowns to cruise to a 5-2 victory.

Jake W. Sweitzer picked up a 4-2 decision at 138 and Michael Moon lost at 145. The team score was 27-11 and set up the marquis match-up of the evening at 152. Unbeaten junior Jace Guy, who placed 5th at last season's state tournament bumped up from 145 to take on state runner-up Jordan Day from Northern. It was a great battle and Day took advantage of every opportunity he had to cruise to an 11-2 win. Bradley Davis won a wild 15-6 major decision at 160 and the Rams led 31-15.
A great battle but Day comes out on top. |
Senior co-captains Alec Horner and Joe Embleton also bumped up to a higher weight class for the evening match. Each picked up big pins for the Rams but not before there were some wild flurries of action that saw the home standing grapplers in a perilous positions that they were able to fight through and ultimately finish the Huskies off. The Rams led 43-15.

Nathan Sweitzer accepted a forfeit at 195 and Hunter Park scored a first period pin at 220 to finish off the Huskies. The final score was 55-15 in favor of the Rams and brought the team's win streak to 13. The Super Duals at Fort Hill scheduled for this weekend has already been cancelled, so next up for Southern is a trip to Oakdale on Tuesday for the make-up tri with the Bears and Century.
All smiles for the Rams on this night. Hunter Park finishes it off. |
