Oh, What a Night

The 150 Club
The Southern Rams hit the road on Tuesday, heading off the mountain to take on the Frankfort Falcons.  The weather outside was cold, but the action in the gym was hot!  The Rams were a perfect 33-0 coming into the match and were poised to continue the winning ways.
Jace Guy in a battle
The match started at 145 where Jake Sweitzer was awarded a forfeit.  The bout at 152 was next and it featured two of the top wrestlers from each team.  Senior Jace Guy took the mat for the Rams in search of his 150th career victory.  Up for the Falcons was their top wrestler, Noah Kiszka.  Kiszka scored an early takedown to take the lead, but Guy was able to escape and score a takedown of his own.  The first period ended with the Southern wrestler clinging to a 3-2 lead.  The Frankfort wrestler chose bottom in the second and despite some great action, neither wrestler was able to score in the period.  Guy led 3-2 going into the final period.  Guy selected the bottom position and quickly escaped to take a 4-2 lead.  Kiszka scored another takedown, Guy scored a reversal and Kiszka was able to get a reversal of his own as time was winding down to send the bout to overtime tied 6-6.  In the extra period, Guy scored a takedown to pick up the win, the 150th of his career.
150!
Declan McCann and Hunter Sanders each scored second period falls at 160 and 170 while Cole Baker and Cameron Glover tallied first period pins at 182 and 195 to extend the Rams advantage.  After Hunter Park was awarded a forfeit at 220, Cole Sweitzer scored a fall in just 18 seconds to put the match out of reach.  Three more first period pins at 106, 113 and 126 and a forfeit at 120 made the score 69-0 going into the final two bouts.
We are a bunch of pinners
Frankfort was able to get on the board with a tight 3-2 decision at 132 and Joey McComas finished things off at 138 with a 12-5 decision.  The Rams move to 34-0 on the season and are scheduled to face off with the Mountain Ridge Miners on Thursday evening in Frostburg.  The top seed for the Regional Duals will be decided in that match.
A great bunch

Soaring

Congratulations Hunter Park!
The Southern Rams slid on over to Morgantown last evening for a match against the University Hawks.  The Hawks entered the match as the 7th ranked team in AAA West Virginia and had 7 wrestlers ranked in the top 6 in the state.  One of those 7, top ranked Jace Stockett (113), did not wrestle against the Rams.
Colum McCann with a win by pin!
For the second match in a row, we started wrestling in the 106 pound weight class.  And, for the second match in a row, Aiden Schwab faced, and defeated, a state ranked wrestler.  Schwab won a 12-4 major decision to give his team an early 4-0 lead.  Colum McCann scored a quick pin at 113 and the Rams led 10-0 going into the 120 pound match.  Brogan Kealy faced off against the 3rd ranked senior Matthew Simpson.  It was a close match throughout and was tied 2-2 when the University wrestler took his final injury timeout and Kealy was award the win by medical default.

University was able to win each of the next three bouts to tighten the team score with Southern holding a 16-13 lead.  Jake Sweitzer was awarded a forfeit at 145 and Jace Guy picked up another pin at 152 and the Rams were in control.  The Hawks won a close decision at 160 and Hunter Sanders scored a major decision for the Rams at 170 to bring the team score to 32-16.  After the Hawks won a decision at 182, senior Hunter Park took the mat at 195 in search of his 100th career victory.
Hunter Park in action!
Park stalked his opponent from the opening whistle and was able to score a nice takedown on the edge of the mat.  As they were ready to restart in the center circle, Park was ready to go for the kill.  In a matter of seconds, Hunter broke his man down and was able to lock up a cradle and scored the win by pin in only 1:13.  Cameron Glover won by forfeit at 220 and Cole Sweitzer won his 30th match of the season to finish off the Hawks.  The final team score was 50-19 in favor of the Southern Rams and keep the undefeated season alive, now 33-0.
Nice work boys!
Prior to the varsity match, our JV wrestlers got some quality matches from the University and East Fairmont boys.  Sophomore Justin Richter led the way and several other Rams picked up wins as well.
Justin Richter for the win!
The Rams are back in action on Tuesday evening as we travel to Frankfort HS to take on the Falcons.  We then return home the following evening for our senior night celebration against Berkeley Springs and Petersburg on Wednesday, January 30th in the Ram Arena.
We do take up some space!

Heavyweight Title

Ram fans were in the house!!
Tuesday evening's match between the Southern Rams and the Williamsport Wildcats had all the makings of a heavyweight title fight.  Each team is highly ranked in the state of Maryland.  Each has a number of highly ranked individual wrestlers.  Each team is full of tough kids backed up back tough JV wrestlers.  The match ups were set and everyone knew we were in for and exciting, very competitive evening of wrestling under the spotlight in the Ram Arena.
Aiden Schwab vs Zach Starr, two of Maryland's best
The match started at 106 in a bout that featured two top ranked wrestlers.  For Southern, it was the 8th ranked Aiden Schwab who's record was 28-3.  Williamsport sent out 20th ranked Zach Starr who was 34-1 on the season.  Starr got out to an early 6-1 lead but Schwab battled back.  After scoring 2 near fall points in the 2nd period, the Ram wrestler was down 6-3 heading into the 3rd.  Starr was in the top position but gave up an early escape.  Schwab was down 2 with time running down but was able to score a takedown to send the match into overtime.  In the extra period, Schwab shot and scored to pull out the victory and give his team an early 3-0 lead.
Senior Nate Tasker in control
Wiliamsport's Zaden Meyer scored a major decision at 113 and Southern's Brogan Kealy won by decision at 120.  At 126, senior co-captain Nate Tasker picked up a big pin for the Rams to stretch the lead to 12-4.  At 132, Southern's Elisha Skipper and Williamsport's Will Custer battled tough for 6 minutes with Skipper coming out on top of a 4-2 decision.  The bout at 138 was just as close with the Wildcats' Malaki Cunningham scoring a 7-6 decision.  Southern led 15-7 after 6 bouts.
Jace Guy with another pin.
The bout at 145 featured two more state ranked wrestlers.  For Southern, it was 9th ranked Jake Sweitzer (29-2) and for Williamsport, it was 17th ranked Darby Bryant (26-9).  In this match, Sweitzer built a 10-0 lead and finished off Bryant with a 12-4 major decision, 4 valuable points for the team and his 30th win on the season.  Jace Guy did what Jace Guy does, scoring a pin at 152 to add to Southern's lead, bringing the score to 25-7.

At 160, Southern's Declan McCann battled tough against the 8th ranked Nate Anderson (29-6).  In the end, the match was decided on a locked hands call with Anderson coming out on top 2-1.  The bout at 170 was just as close between Hunter Sanders and Durise Morton.  The last time these two met, Sanders came out on top in the clinching bout at the Musselman tournament.  This time, Morton was able to cling to a 1-0 lead and fought off a late takedown attempt by Sanders that didn't quite beat the final buzzer.  Williamsport scored a fall at 182 and the Rams lead was cut to 25-19 with three bouts remaining.
King Cole working for the pin
At 195, senior Hunter Park built a 7-0 lead before scoring the fall early in the second period to give the Rams a 12 point lead with 2 bouts remaining.  Williamsport won by pin at 220 and it all came down to the heavyweight bout between undefeated and 7th ranked Tayquon Johnson from Williamsport and 14th ranked Cole Sweitzer (29-2) for the Rams.  Johnson scored a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead.  The two giants battled to a scoreless 2nd period and Sweitzer chose the top position in the third with the goal of turning his opponent and earning the win.  Despite Sweitzer's best efforts, Johnson would not budge from the bottom and held on the for the 2-0 victory bringing the final team score to 31-28 in favor of the undefeated Southern Rams.

The Rams take their 32-0 record on the road Thursday for a match with the University Hawks in Morgantown.  JV wrestling begins at 5:30 and varsity starts at 7pm.

Great Night Up North

The day started with a Pep Rally at the school organized by the cheerleaders
The Southern Rams entered Thursday night's contest at Northern Garrett with a perfect 30-0 record on the season and the goal of scoring another big win to keep the streak alive.  The #StriveforFive season is in full swing and the Rams are hungry for another state title.

The evening began with three JV contest which all went in our favor.  Kyle Horvath, Jaxsen Tasker and Brayden Warnick all registered wins against the Huskies.  The stage was set for the main event with the dual meet beginning at the 120 pound weight class.
Nate Tasker working a cradle
Brogan Kealy and Nate Tasker scored first period pins to get things started for the Rams at 120 and 126.  At 132, Northern was able to squeak out a win by decision to make the team score 12-3 in favor of the visiting Rams.  At 138, Evan Paugh filled in for an injured Joey McComas and was able to turn a tight match into a second period win by fall for Southern.  Jake Sweitzer followed that with a quick stick of his own and the Rams led 24-3.
Another pin by Jake Sweitzer
The bout at 152 featured one of the top wrestlers from each team squaring off head to head.  Southern's Jace Guy and Northern's Hunter Wilhelm took the mat, ready for action.  Guy was able to score a quick takedown to take the lead but Wilhelm was able to escape back to neutral.  With time running down in the 1st period, Guy was able to score another takedown to go up 4-1.  The second period was all Jace Guy as he chose bottom, was able to score a reversal and pick up 3 near fall points to take a 9-1 lead going into the third.  Wilhelm chose neutral and Guy scored another takedown and rode out the period on top for the 11-1 victory.
Jace Guy on his way to a major decision
Declan McCann and Hunter Sanders each won exciting bouts at 160 and 170 to bring Southern's lead to 37-3.  Northern scored a fall at 182, but Southern got pins at 195 and 285 and a forfeit at 220 to bring the team score to 55-9 heading into the final two bouts.  The match at 106 was the third meeting of the season between the Ram's Aiden Schwab and the Huskies' Shane Fink.  Like the previous two, Schwab came out on top in dominating fashion, this time winning a 10-3 decision.  The evening ended with Colum McCann winning by forfeit bringing the final team score to 64-9 in favor of the visiting Southern Rams.

Rolling Along

Jake Sweitzer, ready for action
Wednesday evening was our annual tri-match against the Keyser Golden Tornados and the Fort Hill Sentinels.  This season's edition was hosted by Keyser.  We entered the contest with a perfect 28-0 record and were in search of another 30 win season.

The Rams faced off against Fort Hill in round 1 and had little trouble mowing through the Sentinel line up, coming away with an 81-0 victory.  The match started at 120 where Brogan Kealy scored a first period fall.  He was followed by Nate Tasker and Elisha Skipper who also picked up quick pins.  After 2 forfeits and another fall by Jake Sweitzer, Southern led 36-0 as we were set for the best match of the dual, featuring Fort Hill's top wrestler Paxton Wertz against junior Declan McCann.  McCann scored first but Wertz tied it up and the first period ended 2-2.  McCann scored 3 in the 2nd and added 2 more in the 3rd to take a 7-2 lead.  Wertz was able to score 2 more points bringing the final score to 7-4.  It was all quick pins and forfeits from there with the final score ending at 81-0 in Southern's favor.

The Iron Horses

Hoisting a championship trophy for the 3rd time this season
The Southern Ram wrestling team entered this weekend's Iron Horse Duals with a perfect 20-0 record, two other tournament championships under their belts and the goal of making it 3 for 3 on the season.  The tournament was stacked with numerous teams throughout the state who were worthy of state rankings and we knew the path to the title would not be easy.

The Rams started to tournament with a match against the John Carroll Patriots.  Sophomore Colum McCann got things started quickly, pinning his opponent in only 15 seconds for our first score.  Southern started pouring on the points, building a 58-14 lead heading into the final bout with pitted freshman Aiden Schwab against the first of three state ranked wrestlers he would face during the tournament.  Schwab was fired up and ready and tore into his opponent, scoring 5 quick points and then picking up the win by fall before the first period ended.  The final team score was Southern 64 - John Carroll 14.

In the second round, Southern faced off against the team from Walter Johnson High School.  The match started at 120 and is was quickly 50-0 before WJ was able to score their first (and only) points of the match.  The highlight bout was an exciting 9-6 victory for senior Evan Paugh at 132.  The final tally for round 2 was Southern 74 - Walter Johnson 3.

Our third match of the tournament would be a bit tougher.  In round three, we faced off against the 18th ranked team in the state from Bel Air High School.  The match started at 132 and we soon found ourselves behind 8-0 after the first two bouts.  At 145 and 152, Jake Sweitzer and Jace Guy scored pins for the Rams to give us a lead we would never give up.  Pins at 285, 106 and 113 would stretch our lead to 38-20 and seal the match for Southern going into the final two bouts.  At 106, Aiden Schwab would pick up his second pin against a ranked opponent when he decked Ethan Vogel in the third period after building a 10-0 lead.  Brogan Kealy and Nate Tasker would each wrestle tough matches against state ranked wrestlers but would both drop decision to bring the final team score to 38-26 in favor of the Southern Rams.

Saturday started with a match up against the tough 1A/2A West team from Liberty High School.  On this day, Southern was the better team and used 5 pins, 3 forfeits and a decision to bring the final team score to 51-25 in the Rams favor.  The top match of this dual was a 5-4 victory by Nate Tasker in a bout where he found himself behind 4-1 and battled back for the victory.

Our 5th match of the tournament would be against Howard High School, coached by former Ram wrestler, a 2X state finalist for Southern and 3X collegiate All-American and career wins leader for University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Daniel Carr.  Carr's alma mater was just too strong for his current team as Southern scored early and often and came away with the 69-9 victory.  The top bout of the duals was between Southern's Jace Guy and Howard's Shayan Kassiri, both highly ranked wrestlers.  On this day, Jace Guy held the upper hand, coming away with a dominating 7-0 decision.

In round 6, we battled the team from North County and won 66-9 on the strength of 8 pins.  The best match of this round was again by Evan Paugh.  At the close of the first period, Paugh was down 6-1 to one of North County's top wrestlers.  Evan score a near fall in the second and smelled blood in the water.  In the third period, Paugh chose the top position and was able to score the win by fall at the 5:00 mark of the bout.
A great crowd watching a great match
Our 7th match of the weekend was the showdown between the Eastern Shore powerhouse Stephen Decatur.  The Seahawks entered the tournament ranked 14th in the state.  A trip to the tournament finals was on the line and it turned out to be an epic battle.  Decatur took and early lead after wins at 132 and 138 but as usual, Jake Sweitzer and Jace Guy put the Rams back on top 11-9 after the first four bouts.  Declan McCann won by decision at 160 to stretch our lead to 14-9, but big wins for Decatur at 170, 182 and 195 gave them a 26-14 lead.  Our two big men did their job and 220 and 285 with pins for Southern to tie the score at 26 heading into the lower weights and some of the Seahawks top wrestlers.  At 106, Aiden Schwab dominated his third state ranked wrestler of the weekend, scoring a major decision.  At 113, Decatur sent of their state runner-up who scored a fall to give the lead back to his team at 32-30.  The bout at 120 featured state ranked wrestlers for both squads and it was a match worthy of the rankings.  Southern's Brogan Kealy took the lead and held on until late in the match when D'Amico was able to take the lead and hold on for the victory.  The match stood at 35-30 in favor of the Seahawks with only the bout at 126 remaining.  Southern needed a pin to win and the Ram's senior co-captain took the mat with that being his sole focus.  Tasker scored first and worked hard trying to get the fall.  The first and second periods expired with Tasker in the lead in the bout, but the Rams trailing in the team score.  Tasker chose top in the third and kept grinding until he was able to lock in the pinning combination and score the fall to an erupting crowd of Southern fans.  Southern would win 36-35 in a great battle between two excellent wrestling teams.

The finals would be a rematch between the Southern Rams and Leonardtown.  Southern won by 6 back in December but a lot has changed since that afternoon in Westminster.  The match started with Jake Sweitzer winning his 8th match of the tournament and his 6th pin of the event giving the Rams a 6-0 lead.  The bout at 152 was between Jace Guy and Leonardtown's Trevor Crowley, both highly ranked in the state.  Guy won the earlier match-up but this time it was Crowley's turn.  The 7-4 decision tightened the team score to 6-3 in the Rams favor.  At 160, Declan McCann scored a decision for Southern but Leonardtown's John Podsednik tied the team score up with a 21 second pin.  That is as close as it would get as Southern rolled off 6 straight victories, with 5 coming by way of pin to seal the championship for Southern.  Leonardtown won the final four bouts but it was too little, too late.  The Rams held on to the 42-33 victory, earning the title of 2019 Iron Horse Duals Champions.

Joey McComas starts it off with a 3-2 victory
Despite the lopsided team score, there were a number of close, exciting bouts.  The match started at 138 where Southern's Joey McComas scored a thrilling 3-1 victory to get things rolling.  At 160, there was another nail-biter between Northern's Hunter Wilhelm and Southern's Declan McCann.  At 170, Hunter Sanders and Hunter Myers went to overtime before the Ram's Sanders scored the winning takedown.  Aiden Schwab won a battle at 106, freshman Skyler Glotfelty stepped in at 120 and scored a pin and Evan Paugh closed out the match with a third period pin at 132 to bring the final team score to 64-9.
