Cross-County Clash

Seth Kisner with the pin!
For the third night in a row, the Southern Rams took to the mats, trying to keep their unbeaten dual meet streak alive.  The Rams entered the evening 10-0 and were looking for another win against the cross-county rivals from Northern High School who had a solid 8-2 record.  After winning by only 7 points in the last meeting, this was setting up to be an exciting and very competitive match.  The stands were nearly full and the fans were anxiously awaiting a great high school wrestling match.

The match began at the 152 pound class.  Tanner Massey moved up a weight and lost a close decision to give the Huskies an early lead.  At 160, Justyce Fulmer also moved up a class and picked up a huge pin for Southern to put the Rams on top 6-3.  Northern tied the score with a decision at 170 and Southern would take control from there.

Devan Hamrick scored another pin at 106 to bring the team score to 36-6.  It seemed out of reach, but there was still plenty of wrestling to go.  The Huskies scored a major decision at 113 to close the gap slightly.  Josh King, wrestling at 120, scored an impressive tech fall to seal the win for Southern, giving the Rams a 41-10 lead.

Austin Shaffer over Justin Opel

Beatin' The Dawgs

Freshman Jimmy Schwab scores a big pin!
It was another cold winter night as the Southern Rams visited the Igloo in Accident for the first of two cross-county dual meets with the Northern Huskies.  The gym heated up quickly as the two teams squared off in a very competitive match.

At 170, senior Seth Kisner took the mat with a great deal of excitement and energy.  It wasn't long before Kisner was earning the pin and tightening the team score.  Dalton Cooper also took little time picking up a pin and Southern took the lead 23-22.  Senior Brian Rinker also won by fall and Keith Chapman was awarded a forfeit and the Rams opened a 35-22 lead going into the heavyweight bout.
Brian Rinker's pin gave the Rams the lead for good.

Snowstorm Pinfest

Southern Mat Club's - Ram Tough Tournament
It was a cold, snowy day in Oakland on Saturday, but that didn't stop several hundred die hard young wrestlers from filling Southern High School for the annual Southern Mat Club - Ram Tough youth wrestling tournament.  It was a great day of wrestling and was capped off with a high school dual meet featuring the Allegany Campers from Cumberland and the home-standing Southern Rams.

Seth Kisner with a quick pin
Saturday's match started at 160 with senior Will Foulke.  After giving up some early points, Foulke got the pin-fest started with a second period fall, giving the Rams an early 6-0 lead.  Senior Seth Kisner and junior Dalton Cooper added quick, first period pins to extend the lead to 18-0.  Brian Rinker took the mat at 195 against Allegany's top wrestler.  Rinker took the lead early but Wilhelm fought back to tie the score at 4.  Rinker took a 6-4 lead into the third period then cranked it up, extending his lead to 13-6 before picking up the third period fall.

Senior Keith Chapman extended Southern's lead to 30-0 with a second period pin.  At 285, sophomore Marcus Tichinel thrilled the crowd with a third period pin after falling behind in the score.  As we moved to the lower weights, Allegany had to forfeit to Devan Hamrick, George Zimmerman and Ty Artice at 106, 113 and 120.

Senior Austin Shaffer bumped up to 126 and took to the mat to loud cheers from the home town crowd.  Shaffer put on a takedown clinic in the first period then scored the pin early in the second.  After Shaffer's match, the Rams led the Campers 60-0 with 4 bouts remaining.  Josh King also bumped up a weight class and the result was the same.  King earned the pin near the end of the first period.

Marcus Tichinel thrills the crowd!
Freshman Jimmy Schwab also wrestled in a higher weight class.  His older, bigger, stronger opponent came out strong and built a 6-2 lead early in the second period.  Schwab did not panic and kept wrestling hard and cut the Camper's lead to 6-5 with time running out.  Schwab score a reversal with less than 20 seconds remaining and was able to ride out the clock to earn an exciting 7-6 victory.  Seniors Tanner Massey and Justyce Fulmer finished the night off with two more pins to bring the final team score to 81-0.

The Southern Rams are now 23-3 overall and remain unbeaten in dual meet competition at 8-0.  This week, the Rams are scheduled to wrestle at Northern Garrett on Tuesday, at South Hagerstown on Wednesday and then host the Northern Huskies on Thursday.

Hub Cup Hammer Time

The 27th annual Hub Cup wrestling tournament was held at North Hagerstown High School this past weekend and proved to be a very tough test for the Rams.  Twenty three strong teams from 5 states came together and provided some great competition and some very exciting matches.  As a team, Southern place 14th with 98 points while Cape Henlopen from Delaware won the tournament, scoring 192 points.

Sophomore Devan Hamrick took a 17-1 record into the tournament and was seeded 2nd.  He used first period pins in each of the first three rounds to advance to the Hub Cup finals.  His semi-final win was in just 25 seconds against Jimmy Hasemann from Magruder High School.  In the finals, Devan faced the top seeded Joey Thomas from South Carroll.  Thomas entered the tournament with a 22-1 record and a long list of national achievements leading into the final match.  Devan scored a takedown in the first period and controlled Thomas throughout the entire match to earn a 4-1 decision and the Hub Cup Championship.

Austin Shaffer entered the Hub Cup with a 16-1 record and was also seeded second.  Austin also pinned his first two opponents to reach the semi-final round.  In the semis, Shaffer faced Bradley Derito from Musselman in a rematch from a December match which was won 9-8 by Derito.  The Hub Cup match ended with the same result, a close decision by Derito, sending Austin into the consolation bracket.  Shaffer picked up a pin and an overtime decision against a tough VA wrestler to earn 3rd place honors at the 2014 Hub Cup.

At 170, senior Seth Kisner entered the tournament with a 14-4 record and was the 4th seed.  Seth won his first match by pin then lost a tough 4-3 decision in the quarterfinals, dropping into the consolation bracket.  Kisner won two and lost two in the consis to finish in 6th place.

Wrestling at 182, Brian Rinker was seeded 5th with a 13-4 record entering the tournament.  Brian won three and lost two to finish in 7th place at the Hub Cup.

Super Duals - Day 1

Devan Hamrick with the leg cradle
Day one of the Fort Hill Super Duals was snowed out on Friday afternoon, but Day two proceeded as scheduled.  All Friday's matches will be made up next week, but there were plenty of exciting, action filled matches on the mats on Saturday.

Southern's first match of the tournament was a rematch against the Hyndman Hornets from PA.  In the end, the final score was very similar to the dual meet in December with Southern on top 53-19.  The Hornets always wrestle tough and this match was no exception.  Winning by pin for the Rams were Tanner Massey, Seth Kisner and Keith Chapman.  Winning by tech fall was Devan Hamrick and receiving forfeits were Austin Shaffer, Jimmy Schwab, Ethan Bittinger, Justyce Fulmer and Will Foulke.

Tanner Massey with 5 pins on the day
In round two, Southern faced Spring Mill, WV, a brand new school from the Martinsburg area.  The team had only four wrestlers on the roster so 10 Rams received forfeits.  Tanner Massey picked up his second pin of the day and Seth Kisner won by decision.  The final score was Southern 69 - Spring Mill 12.

The Rams squared off with the Allegany Campers in round three.  This was another re-match from a dual that was held in December.  In round three of the Super Duals, Southern pulled off the rare perfect score, leveling the Campers by the score of 84-0.  Winning by pin for Southern were Josh King, Tanner Massey, Justyce Fulmer, Will Foulke, Seth Kisner, Dalson Cooper, Brian Rinker, Keith Chapman and Marcus Tichinel.  The rest of the Rams received forfeits to give Southern the maximum possible points.
Freshman Jimmy Schwab 5-0 on the day

In round four, Southern faced the Keyser Golden Tornado.  This match would prove to be the toughest match of the day.  In the end, Southern held on for a 45-33 victory for the team's 10th win in a row.  Earning pins for Southern were Devan Hamrick, Jimmy Schwab, Tanner Massey, Dalton Cooper, Brian Rinker, Keith Chapman and Marcus Tichinel.  Winning by decision was Austin Shaffer.

Round 5 was the final round of the afternoon.  In that round, the Rams beat Petersburg 57-24 to cap off a perfect day.  Winning by pin in the final round were Devan Hamrick, Jimmy Schwab, Tanner Massey, Justyce Fulmer, Will Foulke and Seth Kisner.  Earning another decision was Austin Shaffer and receiving forfeits were George Zimmerman, Brian Rinker and Keith Chapman.
